‘Prince George’ number 2013, a 4-4-0 express passenger steam locomotive of 1910 design, was constructed for use by the London & North Western Railway to operate trains from Euston to the midlands and north.
It is intended that the ‘George the Fifth’ class will operate on both the main rail network and heritage railways, and help recreate the glories of rail travel a century ago for the benefit of future generations.
The New Prince George Steam Locomotive marks a transitional point in the history of steam combining a stylish Edwardian appearance with developments such as high temperature superheat, long travel piston valves and a quality steam circuit.
It is hoped that the project will inspire an interest in engineering in the young and also act as a mobile ambassador of British engineering achievement for the future, as well as continuing a long-standing tradition of the names of the younger royals being celebrated on steam locomotives.
