Ankylosing spondylitis (AS) is painful, progressive inflammatory arthritis, mainly affecting the spine. In severe cases, it can fuse the spine together. Whilst AS can be managed by exercise and medication, it is incurable, causing a lifetime of on-going pain.
Around 200,000 people live with AS in the UK. Symptoms first develop in the late teens/early twenties, but awareness of AS is low – it takes on average eight years before a person is diagnosed, which is simply not good enough.
The National Ankylosing Spondylitis Society (NASS) is the only charity dedicated to transforming the lives of people with AS in the UK. We strive to raise awareness of AS, and provide life-changing support to anyone affected, including friends and family.
We empower people with the knowledge to manage their condition with expert guidance through our helpline, publications and website. Our local volunteer-led exercise groups offer specialist group physiotherapy and hydrotherapy to 900 people each week at over 90 locations across the UK. Each session brings people together with others affected in their local area, providing a vital community of support and improving both mental and physical wellbeing. And with supporters like you, we’re helping to fund key research into better treatments for AS.
Help us to reduce the 8.5 year delay to a diagnosis of ankylosing spondylitis (AS), transforming the future for people with AS.
