Today, around two million people live with sight loss in the UK. And it can be tough. From difficulty accessing treatment and services, to a lack of emotional and practical support, blind and partially sighted people each face their own set of challenges every day.
At RNIB, the UK’s leading sight loss charity, we’re here to make sure losing your sight doesn’t mean losing out on life. We provide vital practical and emotional support, empowering people to live the lives they choose – in their homes, careers, and communities.
Gifts in Wills make up over a third of our income. By leaving a gift to RNIB, you can help people with sight loss build skills, gain confidence, and live full and independent lives. People like Amrit.
Amrit (pictured above) began losing her sight at the age of five due to glaucoma, and today she is totally blind with only faint light perception in one eye. As a child, she often felt isolated and excluded from activities she loved, until at 13 she discovered RNIB through a social worker. The charity opened up new opportunities – from access to audiobooks to practical support with independence – which she describes as “a beautiful light of hope.”
Since then, RNIB has been a constant in Amrit’s life – supporting her with technology, employment, and day-to-day independence, even helping her secure her first paid role as a research assistant. The impact of this support has gone far beyond work – from choir singing and abseiling to theatre trips and visiting Buckingham Palace, she’s embraced new adventures and friendships.
Despite the challenges, Amrit lives a full and joyful life with her husband and two teenage children. She’s an artist who creates with gemstones, a singer, a dancer, and in 2023, she proudly won the People’s Choice Award at the Westminster Dance Competition. She’s also a passionate disability advocate, public speaker, podcast collaborator, and volunteer, sharing her experiences in both Punjabi and English to raise awareness and support others living with sight loss.
“RNIB is my loyal and trusted best friend, supporter, guiding hand and there when I need them the most. They stand by their promise to make a positive difference and have never let me down when I have reached out to them in difficult times.” – Amrit.
Gifts in Wills help RNIB to provide the support and services that change lives.
Kevin’s story shows this too. After losing his sight at 54 while working on the London buses, RNIB guided him towards new opportunities. With our support, Kevin completed an NVQ in horticulture – sparking a lifelong love of gardening.
